A replacement has been named to hold the Massachusetts senate seat of the late Edward Kennedy.  Paul Kirk, longtime Kennedy family friend and adviser, will hold the seat until a special election is held on January 19, 2010.

coakleyIn its 220-year history, Massachusetts has never sent a woman to serve in the United States Senate.  In a male-dominated field of three Democrats and one Republican, Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley is poised to make history.  With just 17 women currently in the Senate, a Coakley victory would reaffirm Senator Edward Kennedy’s life’s work in pursuit of equal rights for women.

Breaking the glass ceiling is nothing new to Martha Coakley.  She became the first female attorney general in her state of Massachusetts by winning 73% of the vote. She has received the lion’s share of major state political endorsements in the Senate race, including the Massachusetts Coalition of Police, a dozen key labor unions, and womens’ pro-choice groups including Emily’s List.

Many state legislators serve as Coakley campaign staff, including Senate President Therese Murray as honorary Finance Chair.

Coakley shares several similarities with the late Edward Kennedy, including both being Roman Catholics and a life-long residents of Massachusetts.

With a primary election set for December 8th, Coakley faces the challenge of raising funds in a short period of time against well-financed opponents.  Among the three Democrats she faces, Stephen Pagliuca, a private equity investor at Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital and co-owner of the Boston Celtics has declared his candidacy.

A powerhouse of women are hosting a fundraising event for Coakley on September 30th titled Women for Coakley Luncheon.  Emily’s List founder and president, Ellen Malcolm and Barbara Lee and hosting the luncheon that includes two dozen host committee members.  The luncheon will be held in Boston; for reservation information, contact mailto:npayton@marthacoakley.com.

  1. Wow, the first women senator in Mass. That will be historic.

  2. Must see YouTube- Why Martha Coakley needs our help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-u0BGNiATc&feature=player_embedded

17% in the Senate- not good enough!

  3. Yay! We need another woman senator. I didn’t know she’d be the first woman from MA. Cool! Go Mass! Go Martha!

  5. Please do not vote for a woman just because she is a woman! Look into the details first. We are crime victims (violent crimes) that went to Martha’s office for help with our case as we were not being told the truths nor helped. Martha’s office, even with letters nationally and internationally from concerned citizens never even bothered to write a letter back, and these are crimes especially against women. We then find out that state employees that we are sure Martha knows and on the payroll were doing private business deals with the same people that are in our story. These are deals with a foreign govt. while being paid as employees of our state.

Within 32 hours of arriving in the Bahamas (husband and wife) residents of Massachusetts became crime victims inside a hotel that thousands of construction men were living in. They then were intimidated after and placed in fear of their lives, got everyone out and reported here in Mass. immediately as others were in that hotel (including Mass. residents) with the men still. Victims still have not received justices and sent Martha’s office (as did others- requests for someone in this state to help). The wife and mother has been stalked by one of these men since in order to intimidate her into silence. The victims know who these men work for, where they are from, have photos and witnesses yet still nothing is done, nothing!! The victims then find this story out as they kept asking themselves why are the people in our state specifically not helping us, it seems totally out of charachter and surely enough ……. they find the story listed above (recently)- these are state employees on the payroll doing private business deals with a foreign govt. This is a 1.8 billion $$ deal and all of them at the state house must have known this was going on as it still is going on now. What kind of women would we be if we just voted in a woman just because she is a woman? Martha has known for sometime about this case and was told that the http://www.bahamas.com website owned by the Bahamas govt marketed and sold packages (as with the victims of this story), knowing that they did no immigration on thousands of workers and let them live in these hotels with all of us around this country. (She is also in charge of consumer affairs) That others had been hurt and a warning was up to protect tourists yet nothing was done at all for our protections, they did not even register these men into the hotels where they housed them. That was done as a deal to build faster so that the owners and the Bahamian govt. could profit faster.

If this was your daughter or sister, mom or whomever and you went to people here (or where you live) in our state for help with a violent crime case while dealing with the horrible issues that all victims must do and your daughter and you were ignored totally even by Martha, “would you honestly vote the same in for a better position in our govt.?” Or would you come out and let others know the truths so that our people nationally receive their rights as stated by international laws? We are sure Martha knows Ellen Herzfelder in this story, Martha has worked for our state for years and while Ellen was in a state office being paid with her cronies while this all was going on.

Not one email, no care, do not think Martha cares automatically for womens issues please. Victims were left and are being left to deal with stalking issues also after, still no care about receiving justices, this case was reported in Massachusetts due to fear for victims and witnesses lives, still no care going on here by Martha. If it was her daughter do you honestly think that no emails, no phone calls would happen, of course they would happen-but if it is someone else then it is a totally different story as we know. Martha obviously did not even care that the residents of our state were being sold a very very dangerous product.

We need women that have human rights interests and to relieve the crimes going on in this country towards women and girls. We do not need anyone else with some law degree that is only there for a career step for themselves. We have never seen Martha (as we live here and she has been in office for quite awhile) deal with basically any issues where women are concerned and or needed. Our country needs new people in that do care about all of us and that will not look the other way if a foreign govt. or their govt. friends are involved. We need women that will step up to the plate and take charge, make sure rights are being up held. Violence against women is a major concern and we have no sign of Martha Coakley ever dealing with any cares towards this, all we see if that Martha has a legal background. Do we honesly need another lawyer in our White House/Congress/Senate? Or would the women of our country prefer someone with integrity, honesty and reliance (it comes from within)? This is a true story and this is now coming out in Massachusetts before the elections. We all need to be more careful of our votes and who we give them to, do they really reflect what we need or does it only reflect some false sense of political empowerment?

I am not a Republican nor Democrat, I am an undecided registered voter and simply want the best people in our Congress, White House, Senate and State Houses. I will not vote for Martha nor will my family and most likely not our friends.

  6. We also will not vote in any of Mitt Romneys friends, he is involved in the deals above also, did not care, does not care and does not even know about many womens issues. Steve Pagluica we hope that you will take your future seriously here, our country has had enough of being sold out. The people of our nation are fed up with all of you at this point.
